Population: 21599 Altitude (m): 1029 Alcalá La Real is a large town in the Sierra Sur region located on the southern edge of the Jaen province and is the hub for neighbouring towns and villages, fourteen outlying small villages fall within its boundaries. It is a mainly agricultural area, with a few rocky outcrops. Olive growing and procesing are the main economic activities, supplemented by some livestock rearing, mainly of goats, and cherry plantations. Plastic fibre and film derivatives, crafts and metal working are also quite important products of the town. The La Mota complex is the most unique set of historical buildings in Alcalá la Real; it is a Muslim fortress, which was declared a national monument in 1931. The Abbatial church of Santa María la Mayor, which was originally a gothic place of worship and then later remodelled in the renaissance style, is also a must for visitors.
