Baeza

Population: 15738

Altitude (m): 769

The town of Baeza, located in the geographic centre of the province, is a part of the La Loma y Las Villas district, and knestles on its south western edge. The borough, famed for the renaissance splendour of its historical monuments, is the hub town for the villages in the western district. Its main economic activity is agriculture bound up with olive growing, as well as the olive oil production industry, although tourism around the historical monuments and cultural sites mean that quite a good range of hotel accommodation has developed. The absence of non agricultural land means that areas of natural interest are limited to the Guadalquivir river and the wetlands of the Laguna Grande, declared Natural Beauty Spot. Outstanding examples of its rich architectural heritage are the Cathedral (15th century), the work of Andrés de Vandelvira, the church of Santa Cruz (13th century), in the late romanesque style, the church of the Salvador (15th century), the Convent of San Francisco, the Town Hall and the church of San Andrés, all from the 16th century.
