Bailen

Population: 17472

Altitude (m): 343

A town in the northern district, located on a natural crossroads from north-central Spain down towards the west and east of Andalusia, right on the National-IV road. The municipal area of Bailén is profoundly agricultural and closely bound up with olive growing, although herbaceous crops are also quite important, alongside the development of the olive oil production industry, making these the town's most important economic activities, supplemented by the ceramics and wine industries and the hotel and catering trade. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, built in the 15th century, in the elizabethan-gothic style, is one of the town's chief architectural treasures, and has been declared an Historical Monument. The gothic style hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (15th century), the hermitages of Jesús and El Cristo, both in the baroque style (17th century) and the Virgen de Zocueca, built between the 17th and 17th centuries, are also very interesting.
