Banos de la Encina

Population: 110781

Altitude (m): 573

A village in the northern district, located right in the middle of the Sierra Morena mountains, with farmed land, located in the southern part of the municipal area where a monoculture of olive groves predominates, accounting for only a small part of land use. Olive mills, livestock and hunting activities characterise the economic activity of the village. There are many natural enclaves in the more inland sections of the municipal area, and thanks to its orography, flora, fauna and scenery, the hamlet of El Centenillo stands out as a picturesque and peaceful place, alongside the El Rumblar reservoir and its fighting bull stockyards. The historical and artistic heritage of Baņos de la Encina is impressive, with Burgalimar Castle, construction of which came to an end during the caliphate of Al-Hakan II in the year 968, really standing out. It was declared a National Monument in 1931. The gothic designed parish church of San Mateo (century 15th), the hermitage of the Cristo del Llano (17th century) and the Casa Consistorial (15th century) are also quite remarkable.
