Begijar

Population: 3136

Altitude (m): 561

A little village located on the western slopes of the Loma ridge in the La Loma y Las Villas district, with its municipal area reaching as far as the Guadalquivir river. It is an profoundly agricultural village with forest trees reaching as far down as the banks of the river. Olives are the main crop, supplemented by farmed land down on the Guadalquivir plain where some mainly irrigated industrial crops have been set up. Olive mills and the abattoir at Estación de Begíjar are the most important industrial activities. From a historical and artistic point of view, we must mention the parish church of Santiago Apóstol, built between the 13th and 17th centuries, with its outstanding plateresque frontage, from the end of the 16th century. The Torreón del Castillo tower, declared Historical Monument in 1985, the Episcopal palace, of origin medieval, and the Village Hall, built in the 16th century, are also quite remarkable.
