Carcheles

Population: 1537

Altitude (m): 801

This little village is included in the Sierra Mágina district due to its good communications with the other villages within the district, although geographically it could be regarded as belonging to the Sierra Sur district too. Created when the villages of Cárchel and Carchelejo joined together, it is located on the north eastern slopes of the Sierras de los Grajales and Alta Coloma Mountains, and stretches down to the Guadalbullón river. Olive groves predominate over permanent pasture lands, located to the northwest, and are the economic backbone of the village. The meat and pork processing industries are important economic activities, and the pork is noted for its high quality. The church of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Carchelejo, built in 1786 in line with the classicist tastes of the period, is of artistic interest. In Cárchel the church of Los Remedios, with its stonework façade which contains a half point arch frontage flanked by two pilasters which meet in pinnacles, is quite remarkable.
