Chilluevar

Population: 1721

Altitude (m): 738

A little village located on the northern edge of the Alto Guadalquivir district with its north eastern edge falling within the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park. Its territory is profoundly agricultural, and is dependent on olive groves. This crop takes up lands on the hillsides from the north and east to the river Cañamares and down on the plain, to the south, where there are herbaceous crops. The closeness of farm land to the hills has produced a habitat with the right conditions for small game especies for hunting and for small insectivorous birds, although pressure from hunting has stopped their numbers from increasing. The village centre of Chilluévar has typical steep and narrow streets. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz is the work of the architect Gómez Luengo, and was finished in 1949; it retains an 18th century baptismal font. The Torre del Duende, an old olive mill and oil residue factory, is also quite interesting.
