Frailes

Population: 1858

Altitude (m): 874

A little village located in the south east of the Sierra Sur district, where hillcountry given over to livestock rearing predominates, shaped by well preserved natural spaces filled with pastures and oaks. The excellent climate of Frailes, with very cool summers, is an open invitation to really enjoy getting close up to mother nature. Farmed land on the hillsides is overwhelmingly dedicated to olive groves, although there are abundant fruit trees and some market gardening on the plain next to the Frailes river. Agricultural activity is Frailes' main source of wealth especially olive growing and livestock rearing. There is some noteworthy goats milk production too. The steep village centre still shows touches of traditional architectural from days gone by, with both the parish church of Santa Lucía, the origins of which go back to second half of the 16th century, when a small hermitage was built, later enlargened during the last third of the 18th century, and the Casa de los Mudarra, from the first half of the 20th century, being worth a look.
