Huelma

Population: 6232

Altitude (m): 1002

Huelma is an important settlement located to the south in the Sierra Mágina district, right on the provincial border with Granada. The northern third of the village's municipal area comes under the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, with altitudes reaching up beyond 2,000 m above sea level, then descending down again to the softer landscapes of the Jandulilla river, up in the north of the municipal area. Huelma is mainly agricultural, with more land given over to cereals than to olive trees and it has quite a sizable amount of fruit trees. Up in the hill country scrubland, clumps of esparto grass and wild thyme hold sway. Agriculture and livestock are the economic base of the village, along with the wood furniture industry, which is a great local tradition. There is an outstanding Muslim castle, declared an Historical and Artistic Monument, raised up atop a hillock with steep slopes. The parish church of the Inmaculada is a notable example of 16th century religious architecture, mixing gothic and classical styles.
