This district is located in the south-west of the province, occupying the south area of the river Guadalquivir, bordering to the south with the mountains of the Sierra Sur district and to the east with the Sierra Magina Natural Park.

The city of Jaen is the main administrative, social welfare and commercial centre in the district and the whole province, although industrial activity shows Mancha Real as the real local centre of the wood furniture and agricultural machinery industries.
