A large municipal area located in the central south west of the province and which contains the provincial capital. Within the municipal area there is an expansive area of rolling countryside, to the north of the city, and another smaller area of mountain, to the south, set between the Sierra Sur and Sierra Mágina district hills. The town is built around the edges of Santa Catalina hill, with the castle atop it, from where one can enjoy a wide panoramic view over the province. Economic activities mainly revolve around the service sector, construction, commerce, agriculture and industry. The plains next to the Guadalbullón and Jaén rivers, where there was some market gardening in years gone by, have been converted into residencial districts and grazing areas for milk herds. Outstanding examples of the rich architectural heritage of Jaén city are the Cathedral, built in the renaissance style by Andrés de Vandelvira, and the Arab Baths.
