Located in the geographical centre of the province, on an interfluvial plateau between the river Guadalimar, to the north, and Guadalquivir to the south, it borders with the Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park to the northeast and, to the south, with the massif of the Magina Sierra.

In this district we must distinguish between the mountainous area, situated to the north of the river, which coincides with the Sierra de Andujar Natural Park (Sierra Morena), and the Guadalquivir Valley, where the more southern strip, in which the majority of the district's towns and villages are located, really stands out. The mountain range is mediumly-sized and abrupt with areas of Mediterranean heath that alternate with Mediterranean forest and replanted pinewoods where the fauna finds it the ideal habitat to develop in, hence such wide diversity; so, hunting species like wild boar, deer and buck, as well as species in danger of extinction like the lynx and wolf, are really quite important. The flat campiña area occupies the southern section, and has one of the richest areas in the province for agriculture, due to its extensive irrigated zones on the fertile plain of the Guadalquivir and the Salado stream at Arjona (cotton, corn….), besides low rainfall crops that alternate with the majority olive-growing crop. The fauna of this area is characterised by the presence of abundant hunting species (in the Sierra de Andujar), besides others like partridge, hare, quail and doves; therer are also important aquatic species on the Guadalquivir river.

This district depends mainly on agriculture, bound up with olive growing and industrial crops, cattle raising and hunting, although locally activities like wood furniture, crafts or construction, and even the manufacture of agricultural implments, are all quite relevant. In this regard Andujar and Torredonjimeno really stand out.

Ubeda is the economic, administrative, social welfare and commercial centre of the district, having a large hospital, a large shopping centre and numerous of small businesses, although Villacarrillo also acts as a centre in the area around Las Villas.

Torreblascopedro, due to its geographical location and good links, has its centre in Linares.
