A large town located in the south east of the northern district and which is the second most important centre of population in the province of Jaén. In not too distant days Linares was a important mining centre, and there are still remains of the old mining infrastructure in the northern part of the territory, out between the Sierra Morena massif and the rolling countryside in the south of the municipal area. In terms of agricultural, the northern half is occupied by pastureland, forest species and uncultivated land, and there is also an important amount of livestock, with cattle rearing predominating. Farmed land takes up most of the municipal area, with the largest area given over to olive groves, followed by unirrigated herbaceous crops as well as industrial scale irrigated crops. Economic activity is Linares is supported by agriculture, livestock, services and the metal working industry, with the presence of one particular large company really coming to the fore: the Santana motor company.
