Population: 22732 Altitude (m): 741 The town of Martos is located to the north of the Sierra Sur district , to which it belongs, and has the largest area and highest population in the district. Its municipal area is profoundly olive based and it has traditionally been known as the biggest olive producer in the wold both in terms of fruit production and yields. And it is around these olive groves that an important olive oil production industry has developed. Over the last few years industry has been introduced onto the town's economic scene, and today Martos, alondside Mancha Real, is the most diversified industrial centre in the province and has the highest economic growth, soaking up labour from neighbouring council areas and even from Jaén city itself. The most outstanding examples from its rich historical heritage are: the medieval castle, declared an Historical Monument, the former prison and town hall, an example of civil architecture from the second half of the 16th century, the gothic-mudejar style church of Santa Marta, and the renaissance Pilar de la Fuente Nueva.
