Mengíbar is a Jaén municipal area located on the eastern edge of the Campiña district. It has traditionally kept a balance between agriculture and industry, taking advantage of its strategic location close to the N-323 Bailén-Motril (Granada motorway). In terms of agriculture, the Mengíbar municipal area is divided up between herbaceous crops and olive groves, with practically all of its surface area under irrigation, especially on the plains next to the Guadalquivir and Guadalbullón rivers. The dominant crops are olive trees, sunflower, cotton and cereals (wheat, barley and corn). There is some quite varied industry, from paper manufacture through to textiles, and also including telephones, metal working, olive oil production and refineries for its derivatives. Points of historical and artistic interest are the 13th century feudal homage tower at the castle, and the church of San Pedro, construction of which began in the first half of the 16th century.
