Pegalajar is a village in the west of the Sierra Mágica district, with its north eastern edge belonging to the Sierra Mágina Natural Park. its municipal area ranges from an altitude of 2,000 m. on its edge north eastern down to 500 m. at the river Guadalbullón, only to ascend again up towars the south west right up to the 1,000 m altitude of the Sierra de Grajales Mountains. An almost total monoculture of olive trees takes up the slopes going down to Pegalajar, concentrated in the lands to the south and west (half the surface area of the municipal area). Pegalajar has a noteworthy series of market gardens, irrigated by water from a spring, controlled via a large pond, from where it is distributed out through a network of channels to the plots of land up on the terraces. Outstanding examples of its architectural heritage are the church of Santa Cruz, built during the last decades of the 16h century and the begining of the 17th century with two mannerist style frontages, and the Council building, which still has its 18th century façade.
