Santa Elena can be found in the most northern sector of the northern district, next to the provincial border with Ciudad Real. It is one of the few villages in the province with no particular agricultural inclination, given that crops take up a mere 1% of its total surface area. For this reason, its economy is based on exploiting upland resourses, among which forestry and livestock activities, mainly cattle rearing, predominate. The northern part of the municipal area of Santa Elena belongs to the despeñaperros Natural Park, which is filled with very interesting landscapes, animals and plantlife. The fact that the Andalusia motorway passes through the area has led to the development of some quite important catering facilities. The prime representative of the architectural heritage of Santa Elena is the outstanding parish church, erected in 1793 in the building style favoured in the New Populations; its geometric façade displays a combination of brick and lime.
