The Sierra Sur (South Mountains) region is located in the southwestern part of the province, to the north it borders with la Campiņa region and the provincial capital (Jaen). To the west it borders with the province of Cordoba and to the South-east with that of Granada.

The district of the Sierra Sur depends mainly on agriculture and, particularly, on olive growing, although cherry trees and goat raising are also important agricultural activities. Other important industries have been developed locally, like plastic derivatives and lighting in Martos, plastic films and fibres in Alcala la Real and food products (sweets and canning) as well as furniture in Alcaudete.

Municipal Centres:

Alcala la Real acts a district centre for the towns in its more immediate area: Frailes, Castillo de Locubin and Alcaudete.

Martos is the centre for Fuensanta de Martos and Alcaudete.

Los Villares and Valdepeņas de Jaen, given their good transport links and proximity with the provincial capital, depend directly on Jaen.
