Villarrodrigo

Population: 565

Altitude (m): 872

A village located in the Sierra de Segura district, on the north eastern edge of the province of Jaén, making it the village most isolated from the provincial capital in Jaén. Although it is in the district, Villarrodrigo is not part of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, as none of its municipal area is included inside this protected area. The village centre is located at an average height of 800 m above sea level, sitting on a high plain. The local economy is based mainly on agriculture and hunting. More than half its total land area is given over to olive growing and unirrigated crops, although there is also land dedicated to meadows, pastures and areas of forest. Moreover, it must also be pointed out that the well known Samuel Flores fighting bull stockyard is in Villarrodrigo. Its parish church, a mixture of baroque with mannerist classisism, is worth a visit too.
