Villatorres is a small municipality belonging to the northern district of Jaén, created as a consecuence of the union of Villargordo and Torrequebradilla in 1975, which also included the settlement of Vados de Torralba. A large part of the council area is given over to olive growing. The plains next to the River Guadalquivir favour horticultural crops, such as asparragus and spinach, with the spinach being made into conserves. There is also some industrial activity, in the form of furniture production. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which was erected in the 16th century and which has a renaissance frontage and a choir covered by a mudejar ceiling, and the Condes de Villatorres Palace, built in the 14th century, are two excellent examples of the architectural heritage of Villatorres.
